WORKERS COMPENSATION
Workers Compensation Coverage Options
Customize your Workers Compensation coverage.
No two trucking companies are the same. That’s why Great West provides a number of Workers Compensation options to help you customize a policy to your exact business needs. Additionally, we offer Occupational Accident coverage for independent drivers who require coverage.
Types of Workers Compensation Coverage Options
Occupational Accident Coverage
Owner operators and contract drivers who qualify as independent contractors are not typically covered by state Workers Compensation laws.
Occupational Accident (OCC/ACC) coverage provides insurance for independent contractors. It covers injuries sustained while performing the duties of their lease as a truck driver dispatched by a motor carrier. OCC/ACC can provide benefits for accidental death, dismemberment, and paralysis; accident disability; and accident medical expenses.
Drivers must meet specific criteria to be eligible, including being 23 or older, holding a CDL, having no felony convictions, and no DUI conviction in the last six years, among other criteria.

Contingent Casualty Coverage
Contingent Casualty coverage is available to protect a motor carrier in the event an insured person is declared a statutory employee of the motor carrier by a Workers Compensation board, governmental agency, or a court of competent jurisdiction. This coverage is offered through Old Republic Union Insurance (ORU) as a surplus line insurance.

Monoline Workers Compensation
Great West does offer the option of writing monoline workers compensation insurance. This may be an option in those cases where we are unable to write the commercial auto coverages or we write the workers compensation prior to writing the commercial auto. These policies follow all Great West Workers Compensation underwriting guidelines. For more information, discuss potential monoline coverage opportunities with your agent.

Single-Unit Owner-Operator Policy
Single-Unit Owner Operator policies are for trucking companies that utilize owner operators. Underwriting guidelines require that the owner operator must be leased to a motor carrier for which Great West writes both the workers compensation and truck insurance. These policies are not portable; if an owner operator breaks the lease, the policy will be canceled.
