PHYSICAL DAMAGE
Comprehensive Truck Insurance
Protect your trucks and equipment with Comprehensive Truck Insurance.
Comprehensive coverage pays to repair or replace your semi truck and trucking equipment if it is stolen or damaged in an incident that's not a collision.
Great West’s Comprehensive insurance extends your Physical Damage policy and protects owner-operators and motor carriers from the financial impacts of losing your equipment when disaster strikes.
What is Comprehensive Truck Insurance?
Comprehensive coverage is an important part of a truck’s Physical Damage insurance policy. It is typically added when you insure your vehicle or equipment.
On the whole, Physical Damage insurance protects your trucking company against losses to owned or leased trucking equipment that gets damaged. It is divided into two distinct types of protection:
- Collision, which covers losses from an overturn or accident
- Comprehensive, which covers non-collision-related equipment losses
Adding comprehensive insurance to your Physical Damage policy protects your trucking business against the cost of non-collision damages that can put your trucking equipment out of commission.
What does comprehensive coverage for commercial trucks include?
Adding Comprehensive
Coverage protects against:
- Hail
- Fire
- Natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes
- Theft
- Vandalism
- Damage from a cargo shift
- Hazardous material leaks
- Damage caused by animals and infestations
- Civil disturbances like riots
What is
not covered:
Comprehensive insurance does not cover damages related to a collision, including:
- Collision damage to your truck and equipment
- Collision damage to another person's vehicle
- Medical expenses for you or your passengers after an accident
Examples of Damages a Comprehensive Policy Covers
Here are some hypothetical examples of damages that would be covered by adding Comprehensive protection to your Physical Damage policy (It is important to note that these damages are not covered by Specified Perils coverage or Collision coverage.)
- Your van is damaged by a hazardous material leak and needs new decking.
- During unloading, your tanker trailer implodes.
- Your truck, tractor, or trailer is damaged by cargo shifting or colliding inside the unit.
- Your food-grade tanker is mistakenly loaded with liquid fertilizer, so the equipment can no longer be used for food-grade hauls, which reduces its value.
- Acid leaks from a valve and damages your trailer frame and tires.
- Rodents eat the interior of your truck cab, necessitating the replacement of the mattress and wall padding.
- Sulfuric acid from your tractor’s battery spills onto a fuel line, causing a leak. The sulfuric acid and diesel fuel combine to make a gas that coats the interior and exterior of the tractor with an acid film, resulting in a total loss.
Who needs Commercial Comprehensive Insurance?
Comprehensive insurance is not required by state law, but most lenders will require it when you lease or finance a semi truck. If you own your truck outright, you can decide whether to include Comprehensive protection as part of your policy.
To determine whether to add the protection of the comprehensive policy provides your trucking operation, here are key considerations:
- Does your lender require you to have Comprehensive coverage?
- How much it will cost to replace your equipment if you have a loss? (Consider the cost to repair or replace a damaged truck or trailer using the examples provided above.)
- What is the age of your equipment? Any repair to a truck can be expensive, however, new vehicles and equipment may carry even higher price tags at the repair shop. New truck owners should consider the repair costs of their equipment when choosing Comprehensive coverage to protect their investments.

The Added Benefit of Comprehensive Insurance
When you add Comprehensive protection to your Physical Damage policy, your deductible is waived for any loss caused by fire or lightning.
