Roundabouts can be dangerous for truck drivers, pedestrians, and the motoring public. Read the information below and ask yourself if there are actions you can take to improve your driving skills and reduce the risk of a crash when navigating a roundabout.
Basic Rules
Pre-Planning
- Plan your route in advance and program your GPS.
- Conduct a thorough pre-trip vehicle inspection.
Approaching a Roundabout
- Slow down.
- Read the lane markers and signs, and then get in the proper lane. 3. Yield to pedestrians, bicyclists, and emergency vehicles.
Entering a Roundabout
- Yield to traffic inside the roundabout (even if trucks legally have the right-of-way).
- Watch for traffic entering the roundabout and those circling inside.
- Find a gap in traffic and enter the roundabout cautiously.
- Stay in your lane; do not change lanes or pass other vehicles inside the roundabout.
- Do not stop in the roundabout.

Right Turn

Stay in the right lane.

Activate the turn signal before exiting.
Straight
- Stay in the designated lane(s).

Use the truck apron for cornering.
- Activate the turn signal before exiting.
Left

Stay in the left lane.

Slow down to avoid a rollover.

Use the truck apron for cornering.

Activate the turn signal before exiting.
U-Turn

Stay in the left lane.
